Once upon a time, there lived a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Now Bilbo did not like adventures at all, like most hobbits. A hobbit is a person half your height with harry feet that are very hard. They have very big happy faces. Hobbits live in their own hobbit holes. Bilbo lived in a very nice hobbit hole. One day, something very unexpected happened! Bilbo was out and about when there was a knock at the door. Bilbo answered it to find a wizard named Gandalf. He was looking for someone to go on adventures with. Bilbo did not like the sound of this so he said ”no adventures here, why don’t you come to tea tomorrow goodbye”. With that, Bilbo shut the door as fast as he could. Bilbo asked himself why he had ever asked him to tea. The next day Bilbo forgot all about tea time until ”ding dong”. Bilbo remembered tea! He ran to and fro starting tea and cakes. Then he opened the door to find 13 dwarves with Gandalf at their back. ”Dwalin, Balin, kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Boter, Bombur, and Thorin at your service,” they all said. ”Bilbo at yours,” said Bilbo remembering his manners.They all came in and sat down at the table. Bilbo found himself wanting to go on this adventure, so Gandalf wanted to get an early start. Bilbo went to bed. When Bilbo woke up he saw Gandalf at the door waiting for him. Bilbo and Gandalf found the dwarves and they departed for the misty mountains. Now, they had left the hill and Bilbo’s hobbit hole and were going to try to kill a dragon and rule the lonely mountain. First, they had to get there.
When they first got to the misty mountains, they seemed empty. Bilbo found a cave were they could stay. That night they all got captured by goblins who lived there. Bilbo got to the lower tunnels where no goblin followed him. He went down and turned and turned and down more until he came to a lake. An underground lake with mist everywhere!
Then, Bilbo saw a boat coming towards him and he saw a ring that he put away in his pocket. Bilbo knew it was valuable but did not want others to see it. ”What are you doing out here?” said an ugly thing that just appeared. ”I am trying to get out,” said Bilbo. Then they did a guessing game (if Bilbo won, then he gets lead out by this thing). Bilbo asked “what is in my pocket?” The thing (Gollum) did not know. He attacked Bilbo because he thought it was an unfair question. Bilbo put on the ring and drew his dagger, but Gollum ran past him! This is how Bilbo figured out the ring made its owner invisible. He got past the goblins to the dwarves who had escaped. That night Bilbo saw they where being surrounded by wolves! They all climbed up trees, until the wolves set the trees ablaze. That’s when eagles appeared out of nowhere. The eagles brought Bilbo and company to safe ground. Now the misty mountains, the hill and Bilbo’s hobbit hole were left behind. Bilbo and company walked and walked for what seemed ages before they got to a house with lots of animals. Gandalf was already friends with Beorn ( the owner ). Beorn gave them food and supplies for they had a very long road ahead of them. Beorn also warned them that goblins and wolves were getting ready to attack them! So they set of to Mirkwood.
Mirkwood was so far away, it seemed ages before they got there. When they did get to Mirkwood, Gandalf left to go do do things that wizards do. Bilbo and company went inside the forest unhappy for they thought that he would help them. Then they came to the place of the woodelves. Next they were captured in spider webs. Bilbo was able to escape by putting on his ring. The spiders were afraid of Bilbo’s sword (sting) so the others were able to escape. Then, they were captured by woodelves! Bilbo did not get captured because of his ring, so his escape plan was to load the dwarves in barrels that were traded between elves and men. His plan worked!
They floated down the river to Laketown where they got a very warm welcome.
Here, they collected more supplies, they departed for the lonely mountain. A few days later they found themselves on the side of the mountain. Bilbo and Thorin found a secret door! Bilbo went in with his ring on, then Bilbo saw a little light, it was the dragon. The dragon was sleeping on what seemed 1,000,000,000 pounds of gold. He left to get the dwarves but when they return the dragon is not there.
They all celebrated not knowing Bard, a Laketown man, had killed the dragon and now woodelves and Lakemen were on their way to claim the treasure. A raven warned Bilbo and company, so they asked the raven to get Thorin’s brother and his army. Goblins, Lakemen, wolves, bats, elves, and dwarves had a war then! It was victorious for Bilbo’s side. Bilbo went home with one chest of gold and one chest of silver.
I thought this book was very adventurous and interesting. I liked how the characters were described, especially Bilbo and Gollum. My favorite part was the war of the five armies at the end because reading about war is exciting. There are so many sights and sounds that are part of war that would be hard to write about, and I like to read about war because I have not ever seen a war. I like Thorin because he is the head of the dwarves and he was brave and smart. I recommend this book to my friends because most kids my age would like the magic and the dragon.
